Nuclear Waste Nuclear Waste

Lake Travis, Windy Point, Austin TX

Lodging - We camped. Air temp in the afternoons was around 104-105 but dropped in the evening to the upper-70s. Sleeping was not a comfortable experience. Strong southern breezes all night both nights made sleeping in a hammock comfortable.

Diving - Lake is down but not down so far as to be a real problem. Water temps and viz were:

0-30 FFW 90F 0-6 feet

30-60 FFW 86F 6-12 feet

60-whatever unless you brought a shovel 81F viz limited by light only

Rio Grande perch are nesting. Look for two fish white on front dark blue on back together in the rocks between 15-20 FFW. Then look really close. They are guarding their thousands of offspring which are about 1/8th inch long right now. Looks like the surface of the rock is moving. The is a BIG flat head catfish living in the small sailboat (we're talking 18-24 inches wide.) Lots of sunfish that are getting aggressive and some channel cats . On the night dive could hear the drum everywhere. Saw some large drum, bass, and carp.

The log of OW Dive #5 from Datatrak Had two pretty good students but their bouyancy control (especially the 13 year old) was not wonderful.

Food:
Lots of restaurants around. Some we like:
Hill Country Pasta - other side of the dam on 620 - pasta and pizza good but can be pricey
County Line BBQ, S on 2222 about 5 miles. When you go under 360, it is about a 1/2 mile further on the right. They open at 5. Get there at 5 or be prepared to wait for up to an hour for a table. The BBQ is worth the wait.
Iguana - farther down 620 on the other side of the dam. OK but not great TexMex
Green Mesquite - S on 1763 towards Austin on the right side as you reach 183. BBQ and sometimes music.
Casa Rosa - Also down 1763 but on left side about 3/4 mile N of 183. Pretty good TexMex.
